Xinglai Yang (Taoist who went west) was born and raised in Kunming, the capital of the Chinese province of Yunnan. In 1971, at the age of 12, he began to study Chinese ink painting, calligraphy, art history, philosophy, literature and Tai Ji with the famous artist Guan Shanyue. This training continues until today. From 1980 he also studied at the Yunnan Art Academy and then worked as a teacher at Kunming University for Chinese art.
